Summer Composition Academy

July 19-30, 2021

Want to learn how to write music? Want to develop your current composition skills? The WVU Summer Composition Academy will give you the opportunity to learn from WVU composition faculty. This virtual camp will be held online from July 19-30th, and will include individual lessons, group lessons, and an online concert of music created by the students. The Composition Academy is for high school students (with beginner or advanced level of composition skills) and the only prerequisite is the ability to read music.

Tentative Schedule & Topics

10 am -12 pm: Morning Meeting
1-3 pm: Individual lessons
3-4 pm: Closing meeting

Day 1: Rhythm
Day 2: Melody
Day 3: Harmony
Day 4: motive--Small theme/Large theme
Day 5: Texture/color -writing for specific instruments (ideally the instruments that they will in fact write for)
Day 6: Large form (binary/ternary/blues form/AABA)
Day 7: Writing for voice (songwriting)
Day 8: Film/Video Game primer
Day 9: Putting it all together
Day 10: How should I prepare for college?
