Summer Brass Academy

June 14-18, 2021

The West Virginia University Summer Brass Academy will be held June 14-18, 2021.  This week-long brass camp is designed to help young brass musicians develop technical ability, interpretive skills, and increase their understanding of a variety of genres and musical styles through masterclasses, private practice time, and individual lessons. Students will be instructed by WVU Brass Faculty and additionally gain insight into music entrepreneurship, pedagogy, wellness and self-care, and obtain experience in chamber music ensembles.

The camp will be offered both in-person with some virtual options. The cost of tuition depends on the chosen modality of the student. The Summer Brass Academy is for students completing grades 8-12 with a recommended minimum of 3 years playing experience. 

**Trumpet students with diverse musical interests and backgrounds are encouraged to attend. Instruction will highlight and celebrate the value of versatility, and help students increase their proficiency in varied musical styles ranging from baroque to jazz, commercial to orchestral.

  • In-Person participant: $685

    • ($350 tuition, $335 housing Monday-Thursday nights and 3 meals a day, Monday-Friday)

  • In-Person Commuter: $350

    • (No housing/meals included)

  • Virtual Participant: $150

    • (Please note, only select portions of the camp will be offered virtually - see below)

9 am - 10 am        Stretches and Warmups Session (in-person/virtual)**

10 am - 12 pm      Chamber Music Ensembles (in-person)

12 pm - 1 pm        Lunch

1 pm - 2 pm          Recitals/Performances: Students/Faculty (in-person/virtual)

2 pm - 4 pm          Individual Practice/Lessons (in-person)***

4 pm - 5 pm          Special Topics Session (in-person/virtual)

5 pm - 6:30 pm     Dinner

7:00 pm                Night Time Activities (in-person)

**The schedule on Monday, June 14th will be altered slightly to accommodate those who are traveling to attend the camp. As such, check-in on 6/14 will occur between 8-10 am. The first scheduled activity will begin at 10 am. 

***The camp will conclude on Friday, June 18th with a performance at 2 pm and reception at 3 pm. Parents and/or guardians are to pick up participants at 4 pm. Additional information will be sent directly to camp participants on Monday, June 7th.
