Hooi Yin Boey
In 2014, Dr. Boey was honored by ABU’s Student Government
Association as the “Outstanding Faculty Member of the Year” at ABU’s annual
Commencement. She is also the recipient of the 2012 Distinguished Teacher of
the Year award from the West Virginia Music Teachers Association. Dr. Boey is a
dedicated studio teacher and her students, including pre-college and college
level, have earned outstanding ratings in WVMTA adjudicated performances and
have won numerous awards in WVMTA state piano competitions, WVMTA Mountain
State auditions, and the Morgantown Piano Competition.
Hooi Yin Boey is active as recitalist and accompanist. She
has also given scholarly presentations at the National Convention of the Music
Teachers National Association (MTNA) and at the State Convention of the West
Virginia Music Education Association. As a collaborative artist, she
performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City in the 2010 ensemble debut of
Alderson Broaddus University’s Concert Choir. Other performance highlights
include a 2010 piano-duet recital with her husband, Peter Amstutz, at UCSI
University, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and a 2012 collaboration with ABU’s Concert
Band, performing an arrangement of Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto in G minor, on ABU’s Spring Concert that year.
Dr. Boey is an adjudicator for piano competitions, including
MTNA events in West Virginia, Ohio, and Virginia; she also served on the
semifinals jury panel for the 2016 UCSI International Piano Competition in
Malaysia. Dr. Boey has been an active member of MTNA and WVMTA since 1998
and served on the WVMTA Administrative Board from 2005 to 2017. In WVMTA she
also served as District-Two Chair from 2005-2017, First Vice President from
2007-2009, Competition Chair 2007-2009, and Membership Chair from 2009-2013.
Since Fall 2017, she has been the faculty advisor for MTNA/WVMTA’s WVU Student
Chapter.
Hooi Yin Boey grew up in Alor Star, Malaysia, as the second child in her family and as a native speaker of Mandarin and several Chinese dialects. Her parents and three siblings live now in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, while she and her husband reside in Morgantown, WV.
