Jazz Improvisation
FOR STUDENTS, YOUTH, ADULTS, AND SENIORS
CLASS DESCRIPTION
The Jazz Improvisation class is open to middle-school, high-school, college level and adult instrumentalists looking to develop their skills so they can jam with friends and jazz musicians. This class will introduce you to musical building blocks you will need when improvising your own solos and perform with other musicians at local jam sessions. You will explore essential approaches to articulation, rhythm, and melody through the study of some iconic jazz repertoire in preparation for a group performance at the Community Music Program’s Fall Recital.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this group class you will know how to:
- Play appropriate jazz articulation on your respective instrument
- Improvise swinging syncopated rhythms
- Select effective pitches and understand jazz harmony
- Identify the roles of accompanying instruments in the jazz combo
- Perform several well-known jazz melodies that will allow you to sit-in and perform along with jazz musicians
REQUIREMENTS
- Must play guitar, piano, bass (electric or upright), or a wind instrument at an intermediate/advanced level
- Must be able to read notation treble/bass clef and transpose to concert pitch
- Must have a manuscript note book
- Must have access to music streaming service (YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music)

REMINDER
A class is usually cancelled when registration is less than five (5) participants. In case of cancellation of the class, all students already enrolled will be notified immediately. Submit your registration form as soon as possible to ensure your spot. We will reach out to you to process payment closer to the first day of the group class. Special discounts can be found on the registration form.
