David Bess is Associate Professor of Music Education and recently served as Chairman of the Division of Music from July 2000 through June 2007 and Assistant Chair of Undergraduate Studies in Music from July 1997 through June 2000. He received both his Ph.D. and Master’s degrees in Music Education from West Virginia University and a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Alderson-Broaddus College. Prior to joining the faculty at WVU, Dr. Bess served as a public school music teacher for nine years in West Virginia. While at WVU, he has taught Instrumental Methods, Woodwind Pedagogy, and graduate courses in Music Education, and has served as coordinator of the music student teaching program and the music education area. He is active as a leader in the West Virginia Music Educators Association (WVMEA), having served the organization as Research and Grants Chair, President-Elect, President, and Past-President. He currently serves as Co-Editor of the WVMEA publication Notes A Tempo
. He has been recognized three times for outstanding service to the Division of Music and has received the prestigious Presidential Award from WVMEA. He is an active adjudicator and guest conductor in the area.
